But when you piss off the Reaper, being the best doesn’t matter. So Charming is assigned a Target who is practically impossible to kill. He knows the Reaper hopes he fails—that he’s counting on it. So Charming vows to prove him wrong. He vows to make the kill.
But someone else vows to get in his way. Someone with a big mouth, a sugar habit, and blond hair. Someone who makes his heart start beating again.
And so Charming is left holding more than one person’s fate in the palm of his hand. He thought the choice would be easy, that there really wasn’t a question at all.
He was wrong.
Life or Death?
I read this book, paused and then read it two more times. This is actually something I tweeted to the author and it is 100% true.
I think my "relationship" with Cambria Herbert started when I was interested in reading Heven and Hell #1: Masquerade and I semi-liked it. It really wasn't my thing because of the idea, not her writing. When I found about her Recalled Series, I was like "GIMME GIMME!" It was amazing (book 1) and my favorite character was Charming. Yes, the cocky jerk's name is Charming. When I found about this book (#2) called "Charmed", you know, I was certain I'd know who the main character was which was why I begged for an ARC and I got it.
This book is witty, interesting, dead funny and a killer adventure. We're introduced to Charming, who is an Escort (a Death Escort, ergo, he kills people for the Grim Reaper). He's been killing for 90 years, so he might as well not have a heart but after pissing off GR, he's faced with an impossible target and very limited time. If that isn't enough for this guy, he's also got Frankie, a girl who despises him that's trying to save his Target.
I loved the concept of this book because although Charming was a major jerk for so much of the book, he was changing and you could see it in the way he interacted with Frankie. The character development of everyone was great and it made for lovable characters because the fact is, Charming's a killer and we love him all the same.
I think the main reason I loved this book was being of the dialogue. Herbert writes in a way that is fully mind captivating as well as interesting and appeals to my weakness for witty charm.
